The surfacing Centiskorch splashed molten rock uncomfortably close to Starr, prompting Shalin to recall the Espeon and send out Rielle again. Her Pyroar, Ninetales, and Vaporeon were her lifelines in the volcanic crater, letting her breathe without feeling like her lungs were on fire. She had to protect those three at all costs. Rather than fight with her water-type, she instead reached for her Flygon's Poké Ball, but Finn was quicker on the draw, a Greninja's SMOKESCREEN providing cover for them to flee westward.
Unfortunately for them, westward was a dead end. It was a dead end that rose well above the magma's surface, giving the two a chance to cool off, relatively speaking. Once Rielle had HYDRATED Shalin sufficiently, she took a look around the basalt peak. To her south, she was able to get a view of the peak she had made her observations of the crater from before. The magma geyser was there and running strong, and the precariously-placed boulder was still there, as well. "I'm gonna try to get a higher vantage point," Shalin said, releasing her Flygon. The moment the insectile dragon's wings started to vibrate, she really felt the heat from all the boiling air being blown around. Aborting, she slid off the dragon and back onto her Vaporeon. "...Never mind."
While they had a breather, Shalin elaborated a bit on her story of the Mirage Palace, and her speculation of what they would see here. "Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. There are some truly fantastic things hidden within Hoenn's most remote corners. Sometimes I wonder if Keldeo is one of them," her mind wandered to the Sacred Sword she had wanted to meet.
While she didn't verbally respond to Finn's answer, she did nod in understanding, leading the way back around. Without having to flee hostile Pokémon, she could more easily observe her surroundings in great detail. She pointed toward a narrow tunnel exit that was too small for a large flying Pokémon to enter. "I don't think that the steep tunnel we got here through is the only one," Shalin concluded. "And I thought the Shark's Maw on top of Meteor Falls was a pain to navigate. Great Ho-oh Almighty..." A second such tunnel, this one they were at the top of, was nearby. Taking a look at it, though she could not see all the way down the sloped rock formation, she was able to conclude that, through cross-referencing her map, it would ultimately lead back to the fork that had brought them here in the first place. It would involve a fair bit of backtracking, and who knows where those Centiskorch were by now...
